"A hole new concept."

Don't worry nobody needs to see a dentist here. Cavity is a concept by me (Winner of the Breakout Cardist of the Year 2016) in collaboration with Chase Duncan (Founder of Pocket Park). This concept is called "Cavity" because it uses various types of HOLE(s) to come up with different, unexpected and unique motions. Cavities take the art of packet-cutting to a whole new dimension. It gives you a new ground to explore upon, creative freedom and wide options of grips to play with. And there's a lot more!

The idea behind "Cavity" was definitely to bring more possibilities to Cardistry. And as you might know I'm best known as the creator of "Cardestroy" so my Packet-Cuts used to go unappreciated. That's the reason why I decided to combine Cardestroy + Packet Cutting as a solution.

"When Shiv first brought Cavities to me, it was refreshing to see such a large innovation happening in an area I felt so familiar with.

The first step for us was obvious: by the time Cardistry-Con '17 rolled around, we would try to have a beta version of Cavities ready to test out on the attendees. We did just that and we were very happy with the enthusiastic feedback we recieved. Neither Shiv nor I were prepared for all of the challenges our project would bring, but after several months of trial and error we are now in the final stretch!

Shiv has filtered hundreds of shapes down into a cohesive eight Cavities that each fulfill a unique function. I can say with zero hesitation that Cavities are as big of a departure from Squids as Squids were from playing cards. I’m stoked to start production and can't wait to see what gets created with them.

We are truly entering a new world." - Chase Duncan

Here's what a few known Cardists of the community think about this concept.

WHAT was the INSPiration?

Cavity was inspired by the first move from my video "INTEGRATE" (which was premiered at the Cardistry-Con 2016 Berlin, Germany). As shown below:

One fine day I was just playing around with that single card shown in the above footage and discovered that rotating a packet while its corner inserted in the hole of the card allows me to easily move two packets at once. That changed everything. It was when I knew there was more to it. So I started experimenting.

Another huge influence was without doubt "Squids" by Pocket Park. While I was playing with that card, in some grips the card would bend which seemed inconvenient. Hence, I knew it isn't supposed to be a single card but a "Packet".

You'll learn more about the "Evolution" of Cavities below.

When I realized that Cavities had to be a in a "packet" form and not just a "single card", I made packets by sticking some cards together and cutting out 'horizontal' and 'vertical' holes in the center of the packets as the basic idea. This is how the first ever Cavity prototype looked like:

Yeah looks like something I should've destroyed already.

Later I made a fairly better set of prototype with the perfect size of holes required and posted the following video with them on my Instagram.

I got to say, I was blown away by the response form the cardistry community as well as laymen! I got the similar kind of feedback that I had received for "cardestroy" the very first time. That was the moment when I realized that Cavities had to be a thing and should be made available to others.

Eventually, I succeeded in making my own "Acrylic Prototype" and made some of the other types of holes that I had planned. I worked on making them over and over until they were perfect to experiment with. They were pretty fragile to mass produce and that's when I got an opportunity to collaborate with my great friend Chase Duncan (Founder of Pocket Park). My prototype, thus became the blueprint Pocket Park.

And finally after months of development and challenges we are ready to produce them as Cavity Squids!

Why "Squids" you ask? Squids have come a long way and have had a huge influence in the Cardistry Community in the past years. They’re flexible, feel great in hands, are durable and waterproof as well. Another main reason is good amount of people in the community have been familiar with squids and have them. Now they just can add cavities as a weapon to their collection and it can be used with the squids you already have!

Last but not the least, Chase has been a really good friend to me as well as an inspiration. Also the one to present me the "Breakout Cardist" award at the Cardistry-Con '16, it's been an honor collaborating with him and am really thankful.

For now we've decided to release the following eight types of Cavities:

FEATURES: Insert a corner and move 2+ Packets at once, holes can also be used as grips and more!

How many variants of cavities have you come up with?

For now we've decided to just do the eight different types of cavities (To view them, click here). There is much more planned for the future, stay tuned!

Do you see Cavities take over Cardistry in a while and become a large sub-genre?

That'd be interesting! I think Cavities have the potential to take over Cardistry and become a large sub-genre in the near future but not replace it, Cardistry is where it all started. What I truly like about them is not them just being visually cool but it also opens up my mind every time I use them. You're dealing with a new object with every Cavity you experiment with. I'd say it as Matthew Beaudouin puts it "Cavities are so unique that using them feels like rediscovering Cardistry". Also not to forget the fact that many well-known cardists of our community have got a very positive response towards them as well. Let's see where it goes!

Is it easier or harder to create a cavity move in your experience compared to creating normal flourishes?

In my opinion it's actually much easier to create moves with Cavity compared to normal flourishes as now you have a new ground to explore upon and wide options of grips to play with. So all you need to do to start creating cavity-moves is everything you already knew in Cardistry with adding the Cavity element somewhere it fits and you'll already be creating stuff.

Does it enhance your creative process for creating normal cuts with normal cards after you use Cavities?

It does open up your mind up for creating standard packet-cuts when you get back to it but I'd say it works better backwards. Knowledge of standard packet-cuts enhances your creative process for creating Cavity-cuts as now you have more options to play with for each cut you know.

What's your favorite variation of Cavity?

I like most of them as all of them have different features but currently one of my personal favorites has to be "Donut"!
